As a fitness professional, I need to renew my first aid certification every 3 years. I renewed mine this week with the greatest teacher I have yet had who introduced the topic by saying:
"Don't confuse simple with ineffective".
What are we actually trying to achieve here?
Is there a simple way to achieve it?
Why don't you just do that?
No really... why don't you just do that?
We tend to make things harder than they are.
This one statement had me thinking about one of my own goals which is to get more sleep. This would have a huge impact on my life but it keeps eluding me. Having a young family and early morning start time at work makes this challenging until I realised... I just need to go to bed earlier.
I need to drop everything unnecessary and simply go-to-sleep. Close the computer, turn off the phone, put down what I'm reading, stop tidying the house, stop getting into wonderful conversations with my wife (sorry Dessi!)
Pick something you want but have been putting off:
It could be movement / fitness, nutrition, connecting with a loved one, anything. Tease out the simplest, smallest first step and do it today. Now if possible.
Want to be fitter? Do some movement, anything. Today.
Want to improve your diet? Choose a healthy lunch. Today.
Want to improve your personal relationships? Send someone a message, give someone a hug. Today.
Want to get stronger? Drop down and do a set of pushups. Now.
Why not?
Simplicity used well could be the antidote to our excuses.
